The goldenberry (Physalis peruviana) originates in the Peruvian and Ecuadorian Andes in South America. It has been introduced to other countries, including South Africa, Australia, Fiji, China and Hawaii. Accordingly, it is known by a variety of other names – Inca Berry, Cape Gooseberry, and Peruvian Ground Cherry.

It is believed that Physalis peruviana can be grown successfully wherever tomatoes are grown; the fresh berries themselves are similar in size to a small tomato, weighing between 4 and 10g. However the flavour of the fresh golden berry is characterised as sweet with a ‘uniquely fruity’, grape-like tang; floral and caramel aroma notes have been described. When sun-dried, as our golden berries are, the flavour has been described as ‘very agreeable’.
