India

Sourced from across the globe

The predominant growing region for psyllium is northwest India, where the annual plant benefits from the warm, dry conditions that follow the rainy season. Its Indian name – isapghula – derives from the Persian words for horse’s ear, relating to the shape of psyllium’s small, pink seeds.

One psyllium plant can produce up to 15,000 individual seeds, which are contained within small capsules or pods. The seeds themselves have a protective, outer coating (husk) containing a soluble fibre known as mucilage. When in contact with water, psyllium husk can expand to about 10 times its original size.
