Known as the “Queen of all Spices” in its native country India, cardamom is the world’s third most valued spice behind saffron and vanilla. Our Cardamom is grown in Guatemala – the largest producer of cardamom in the world and is powdered to ensure both the nutrients and the flavour can be preserved.
Originating in the western ghats of India, abundant cardamom growth led to the region being named “the cardamom hills”, and cultivation has now spread to regions throughout Asia, Africa, and South America. Cardamom has an extensive history, dating back over 4000 years due to its reputation for nutritional and medicinal properties. The Ancient Egyptians were one of the first to advocate cardamom, using it for oral hygiene as well as part of traditional rituals and embalming. Due to its strong aromatic scent, cardamom was also used by the Romans and the Greeks as a perfume and has been used throughout Asia and Africa to enhance the flavour of food for hundreds of years.
Cardamom seeds are the primary element of cardamom powder, these grow within cardamom pods on leafy green shrubs, before they are harvested and ground. Offering a taste likened to a mixture of ginger, cinnamon and mint, cardamom is great for both sweet and savoury recipes. Besides being a delicious addition to cooking, cardamom has been largely associated with easing indigestion, anti-bacterial properties and eliminating mucus. In Arabic countries, cardamom has even been said to have aphrodisiac qualities!
