Carob powder is derived from the dried seed pods of the Peruvian algarroba tree. Also known as Mesquite, our fibre-rich Peruvian Carob has a deliciously sweet, nutty flavour that makes it a great caffeine-free alternative to cacao powder.
Not to be confused with Spanish carob (Ceratonia Siliqua), mesquite grows on the northern coasts of Peru on the algarroba tree, offering a much more pleasant and sweet flavour. These trees are adapted to survive in extreme drought conditions and extract large volumes of moisture from soil to the extent that nearby plants can be deprived of water. With the potential to live for over a millennium, the tree is also used to produce timber due to their strong durable wood.
Carob trees have also been known to be used for their medicinal properties, particularly for digestion problems including diarrhoea and heartburn. Underneath the bark is a red/orange sap that was traditionally used to heal burn wounds and cuts as well as to ease discomfort from sore throats and stomach pains.
Our carob grows in the Pirua region of Peru and is made into powder by dehydrating and grinding the seed pods harvested from the algarroba tree.
