Cultivated for thousands of years, ginger is a flowering plant in the Zingiberaceae family – related to turmeric, cardamom, and galangal. Ginger plants display yellow flowers and are often used for decoration while the roots can either be chopped and used in cooking as fresh ginger or dried and milled to form the light brown ginger powder.
In traditional Chinese medicine, ginger is known to have been used to treat nausea and to aid digestion. The ancient Chinese classified ginger as a ‘yang tonifying herb’ – a herb that restores the balance of yin and yang by warming up the body. Gingerols present in the root are linked to anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties making it popular as a remedy for treating cold and flu symptoms. Additionally, ginger powder is typically high in manganese which contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, to the maintenance of normal bones and to the protection of cells from oxidative stress.
