Spirulina is a cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) that thrives in extreme conditions where most microorganisms cannot survive and is even said to have been one of the first organisms to live on earth. Our spirulina powder is high in protein, vitamin A, thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, and iodine as well as a source of fibre!
Tolerating temperatures of up to 45°C and an alkaline pH of 11, spirulina is well adapted to harsh environments growing naturally in mineral-rich freshwater pools often situated near volcanoes. The resilient cyanobacteria are free-floating and autotropic–generating food and energy from carbon dioxide and sunlight.
Our spirulina is grown in the secluded rural regions of Hainan and Jiangxi, free from air and water pollution growing far away from industrial areas. Surrounded by pristine natural forests, this location is ideal for spirulina cultivation as the freshwater ponds are completely isolated from urban areas while still benefiting from long hours of sunshine. Our spirulina is routinely tested for the presence of mercury, lead, and other contaminants to ensure that the finished product is completely pure and poses no risk of heavy metal poisoning.
Spirulina was even considered by NASA as a food for astronauts due to its impressive protein content and nutritional profile.
Blend our organic spirulina powder into a green superfood smoothie or add to homemade lemonade. Alternatively, sprinkle into salads and soups for a savoury spirulina kick.
